What Happens In A First Music Lesson?

For many parents, booking a first music lesson comes with a few questions.

Will my child feel comfortable? What if they're nervous? Do they need experience? Will they be expected to perform right away?

The good news is that a first music lesson is designed to be welcoming, encouraging, and low-pressure. At Franklin Brentwood Arts Academy, our goal is to help students feel successful from the moment they walk through the door.

Whether your child is interested in piano, voice, guitar, drums, violin, or acting classes, the first lesson is all about getting to know them and helping them feel excited about learning.

Your Child Does Not Need Experience

One of the biggest misconceptions about music lessons is that students should already know something before they start.

In reality, most beginners arrive with little or no experience.

A first lesson is designed for exactly that. Our instructors meet students at their current level and guide them step by step.

Students don't need to know how to read music, understand music theory, or have any previous training. They simply need a willingness to learn and explore something new.

Building Confidence Comes First

While learning skills is important, confidence often comes first.

A great teacher understands that students learn best when they feel comfortable and supported.

Many children arrive feeling excited but nervous. Others are naturally shy and take a little longer to open up.

That's completely normal.

The first lesson is often focused on helping students relax, have fun, and experience an early success that makes them want to return.

What Happens During the Lesson?

Every instructor has their own teaching style, but most first lessons include:

  • A friendly introduction and conversation

  • Learning about the student's interests and goals

  • Exploring the instrument or activity

  • Simple beginner exercises

  • An introduction to basic skills and techniques

  • Time for questions from students and parents

The lesson is designed to feel engaging and achievable rather than overwhelming.

Our instructors want students to leave feeling excited about what they learned and eager to come back.

Piano, Voice, Guitar, Drums and Violin Lessons

The first lesson looks slightly different depending on the instrument.

For example:

Students may learn basic hand position, simple rhythms, and a few notes on the keyboard.

Students may explore breathing, posture, vocal exercises, and songs that match their interests and age.

Students often learn basic hand positioning, strumming patterns, and beginner techniques.

Students begin with simple rhythms and coordination exercises that build confidence and timing.

Students learn instrument care, posture, bow hold, and introductory playing techniques.

The goal isn't perfection. The goal is helping students discover that they can do this.

What About Acting Classes?

For acting students, the first class focuses on participation, creativity, and confidence.

Students may take part in theatre games, improvisation exercises, movement activities, and simple performance exercises.

Many children discover that acting classes help them become more comfortable speaking, collaborating, and expressing themselves.

What Should My Child Bring?

Most students simply need:

  • A positive attitude

  • Comfortable clothing

  • Any required instrument (if applicable)

If you're unsure what to bring, our team will happily guide you before the lesson.

The First Lesson Is About Finding the Right Fit

Parents sometimes worry that they are making a long-term commitment.

The first lesson is really an opportunity to see whether the instructor, environment, and learning style feel like a good fit for your child.

Our goal is to create a positive experience that helps students feel comfortable, supported, and excited to continue learning.
